Artist's Description

Flowering bromeliad plant (family Bromeliaceae) growing next to an orchid (yellow, family Orchidaceae) in a cloud forest. The Bromeliaceae has over 2000 members, which grow in both very dry and very humid habitats. Most are epiphytes, growing on rocks or tree trunks and obtaining water and nutrients from the air and rain. Others are soil- growing, and have fully-developed root systems. The Orchidaceae is one of the most diverse of all the flowering plant families, with over 20, 000 species worldwide. Photographed in Mindo, Ecuador.
